10 Cheapest Long-Haul Holiday Destinations for Autumn

With summer well and truly over and autumn under way, now is the perfect time to be thinking about your next long-haul holiday. According to data collected by Skyscanner and the Post Office Travel Money, there are ten dreamy destinations, that will not only allow British travellers to escape the bad whether Britain is set to experience this November, but will also save them money while doing so.

Britons in search of value for money would do well to visit Japan. New data from the Post Office’s Annual Long-Haul Holiday Report  identifies Tokyo as the cheapest long-haul holiday destination of 2018. This report compares average food prices for food, drinks, and other common purchases in 42 different destinations.

The items compared on the Post Office’s Annual Long-Haul Holiday Report include a bottle of water, a cup of coffee, a can of cola, a bottle of beer, a 3 course meal for two, a glass of wine, a bottle of insect repellent, and a bottle of sun cream.

It is difficult to determine the average cost of a holiday with precision because there are many different factors involved. However, it is possible to determine some average figures. For example, while on holiday Britons will spend an average of around £200 per person, for each week they are away on holiday. With the average holiday being a fortnight, this means that the average amount Britons use for spending money is around £500.

Tokyo, Japan

Tokyo pipped Cape Town to the Post Office’s top spot for long-haul destinations, with its basket coming in at a cost of £43.14. Compared to last year, its basket of essential tourist items cost £48.90, which is a 16 percent decrease on last year’s basket.

Skyscanner, one of the world’s largest travel search engines, found a round trip for just £395 from Bristol Airport on November 6 and returning on November 20. While flights departing from London Gatwick on November 6 and returning November 19 came in at around £465.

In line with Bloomberg, the current exchange rate of the British pound against the Japanese yen is 147.5759 (JPY), and according to Bloomberg, the pound is up +0.01% against the Japanese yen, as of 5:36pm on September 19. Travellers seeking to exchange £500, the average amount for a 2 week holiday, would see a return of around 73,800 JPY.

Cape Town, South Africa

Cape Town came in second place, with its basket for tourist necessities coming in at £57.40. This is a 12 percent decrease from last year’s basket, which cost £64.50.

A round trip departing from London Gatwick on November 7 and returning November 20 comes in at a cost of £447. Meanwhile the same trip leaving from Bristol Airport on September 7 and returning September 20 came in at around £576.

According to Bloomberg, the current exchange rate of the British pound against the South African rand is 19.2579 (SAR), making it 0.01% stronger, as of 5:38pm on September 19. Holidaymakers wanting to exchange £500 for the South African rand, would get back around 9,700 SAR.

Hoi An, Vietnam

Vietnam came in third on this years Post Office Travel Money Long-Haul Holiday Report, with its basket costing £65.85. Compared to last year’s basket which cost £76.74, this means that there is a 16 percent decrease on this year’s basket.

Skyscanner couldn’t find direct flights to Hoi An, but they did find flights to Da Nang, Vietnam, which is 14 miles from Hoi An. Flights leaving London Heathrow on November 5 and returning November 22 cost £453. Compared to a round trip which leaves on November 8 and returns November 22 from London Luton Airport come in at a cost of £757.

The current exchange rate of the British pound against the Vietnamese dong is 30543.3700 (VND) as of November 19. This means that if you wanted £500 in spending money, you would get a yield of around 15,271,685.00 VND.

Bali, Indonesia

British travellers who are looking to escape Britain this Autumn, then Bali is an excellent choice. It was fourth on the Post Office’s annual Long-Haul Holiday Report with its basket coming in at a cost of £66.61. This is a 15 percent decrease on last years basket, which came in at a cost of £76.95.

A round trip departing from London Heathrow on November 3 and returning November 17 comes in at a cost of £375. However, the same round trip departing from Bristol Airport on November 6 and returning November 13 costs £648.

The current value of the pound against the Indonesian rupiah is 19,634.5500 (IDR), which puts it up +0.64%, as of 4:59pm on September 19. What this means is, if you wanted £500 in spending money, it would translate into around 9,778,825.00 IDR.

Mombasa, Kenya

Mombasa ranked fifth in the Post Office’s long-haul destination, with the essential tourist necessities coming in at a cost of £66.77. This is a 3 percent decrease on last years basket which cost £68.59, which placed Mombasa in third place.

Searching flights on Skyscanner you can find a round trip departing Manchester Airport on November 7 and returning on November 21 at a cost of £421. Meantime the same round trip departing from London Stansted, on November 13 and returning on November 21, costs £621.

The current value of the pound against the Kenyan shilling is 132.4661 (KES). So, if your looking to exchange £500 for spending money while on holiday that would get you around  66,000 KES.

Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

Placing sixth in the Post Office’s report is Punta Cana with its basket coming in at a cost of £67.46, which is a 27 percent decrease on the cost of last year’s basket, which cost £85.34.

Return flights to Punta Cana departing from London Gatwick on November 6 and returning on November 20 cost £352. Compared to the same round trip departing from London Luton, on November 4 and returning November 18, costing £744.

The current exchange rate of the pound against the Dominican Republic peso is 65.5956 (DOP), which makes it +0.18% stronger, as of September 18. Holidaymakers looking to exchange £500 would see a yield of around 32,800 DOP.

Orlando, USA

Meanwhile Orlando placed seventh on the Post Office’s list, with its basket of essential tourist necessities coming in at a cost of £71.82. This is a 12 percent decrease from last year’s basket which cost £80.60.

A round trip to Orlando departing from London Heathrow on November 9 and returning November 21 came it a cost of £274. Meanwhile the same round trip departing from London Luton, on November 7 and returning November 22, cost £400.

The currant value of the pound against the United States dollar is 1.3144 (USD), which is -0.02% weaker, as of 5:42pm on November 19. Tourists looking for £500 in spending money would see an exchange of around $700, in Orlando.

Colombo, Sri Lanka

Colombo placed eighth on the list, with its basket costing £72.12 for the fundamental tourist essentials. This is a 5 percent decrease from last year’s basket, which cost £75.83 and placing Colombo in fourth place.

Flights to Colombo departing from Manchester Airport on November 1 and returning November 16 come in at a cost of £308. Compared to the same round trip departing from Bristol Airport, on November 9 and returning November 23, which costs £554.

The current exchange rate of the pound against the Sri Lankan Rupee is 219.7091 (LKR), as of September 19. For travellers looking to exchange £500 for rupee would get an exchange of around 109,900 LKR.

Penang, Malaysia

Placing ninth is Penang. Its basket cake in at a cost of £76.21. Compared to last year when it placed eighth on the list, with a basket costing £81.77, which is a 7 percent decrease on last year.

A round trip to Penang departing from London Heathrow, on November 12 and returning November 23, came in at a cost of £445. Meanwhile the same return trip departing from Bristol Airport, on November 8 and returning November 22, came in at a cost of £554.

The current exchange rate of the pound against the Malaysian ringgit is 5.4689 (MYR), which puts it up +0.41%, as of 4:59pm on September 19. Exchanging £500 for ringgit would see a return of around 2,724.40 MYR, in Penang.

Cancun, Mexico

Finally, Cancun placed tenth, with its basket coming in at a cost of £80.70. Cancun had the biggest decrease of all ten of the destinations, with this year’s basket having a 20 percent decrease in cost from last year’s basket, which cost £96.84.

Skyscanner found a round trip to Cancun departing from London Heathrow, on November 7 and returning November 28, coming in at a cost of £377. The trip departing from London Stansted on November 1 and returning November 14, came in at a cost of £591.

The current value of the pound against the Mexican peso is 24.6771 (MXN), and according to Bloomberg the pound is up 0.01%, as of 5:33pm on November 19. Meaning that tourists looking to exchange £500 in spending money would get back around 12,300 MXN.

Which really is the Cheapest Long-Haul Holiday Destination?

The Post Office’s report isn’t perfect. For example, Phuket, Thailand placed 12th on this year’s annual report, with a three course meal for two with a bottle of wine, supposedly costing £67.99.

However, according to Numbeo’s cost of living survey, which takes into account the price of around 50 items, a three course meal for two at a mid-range restaurant cost around £15. If you were a real bargain hunter you could find a meal at an inexpensive restaurant for around £3.00.

“The table is compiled from a combination of data supplied by the long-haul specialist Travelbag and national or regional tourist offices of participating countries. Resorts featured are chosen as representative of the prices UK holidaymakers will generally find in the destination. Random online checks were made to authenticate these prices,” says the Post Office.

Britons, in search of the perfect Autumn getaway should make sure to do their research before booking anything, to find the best deals available.
